1.2  Lab Safety

The following list outlines important safety guidelines for the laboratory:

  1. Your first priority is safety, for yourself and your classmates.
  2. Under no conditions will any student work alone in the laboratory.
  3. If your team is allowed to work in the laboratory without the presence of Dr. Picone (does not apply to scheduled labs), be sure that he knows prior to when you will be inside the laboratory. Keep the laboratory door open. If there is an accident, someone will notice.
  4. In case of an accident call:

  5. Read the manual / lab assignment thoroughly before experimenting. Be sure to check for possible hazards that could be involved with your experiment.
  6. Ties and loose clothing are to be avoided in the laboratory, since these items could be easily caught in machinery or equipment.
  7. Long hair should be tied back in the laboratory.
  8. Do not touch any loose wiring. Avoid water near any electrical wiring. Notify the proper authority (your instructor and the laboratory manager) of any hazards.
  9. Closed toe, low heal shoes must be worn in the laboratory.
  10. Be sure not to wear shorts or synthetic pants in the laboratory. Non-synthetic pants do not melt on the skin.
  11. You are advised not to wear eye contacts in the laboratory. Chemicals can be trapped between the eye and contacts thus damaging the eye, or welding can affect the contacts.
  12. Always keep your work area clean.
  13. Food, drinks, and smoking are not allowed in the laboratory.
  14. Disconnect the equipment from the power outlet when you are done.
  15. Clean the equipment and pick up work area before leaving the laboratory.
