Lab Safety Guidelines

General Safety Rules

  • Never work alone - Always have another lab member present
  • Know emergency procedures - Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes and emergency contacts
  • Proper attire required - Closed-toe shoes, long pants, safety glasses when using tools
  • Clean as you go - Keep work areas clean and organized
  • Report incidents immediately - Any injury, near-miss, or equipment damage must be reported

Equipment Safety

  • Tool training required - Do not use power tools without proper training and supervision
  • Inspect before use - Check all equipment for damage before each use
  • Proper storage - Return all tools to designated locations after use
  • No modifications - Do not modify or repair equipment without authorization

Electrical Safety

  • Power down first - Always disconnect power before working on electrical systems
  • Proper wire management - Use appropriate gauge wires and secure all connections
  • Avoid water hazards - Keep electrical components away from liquids
  • Ground fault protection - Use GFCI outlets when available

Chemical and Material Safety

  • Read safety data sheets - Know the hazards of all materials before use
  • Proper ventilation - Use fume hoods or work in well-ventilated areas
  • Personal protective equipment - Use appropriate gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection
  • Proper disposal - Follow environmental guidelines for waste disposal

Medical Emergency

  1. Assess the situation - Determine if scene is safe
  2. Call 911 - For serious injuries or medical conditions
  3. Provide first aid - Only if trained and situation is safe
  4. Notify Campus Security - Call (360) 438-4380
  5. Contact Lab Director - Notify as soon as possible
  6. Document the incident - Complete incident report

Fire Emergency

  1. Sound the alarm - Alert all occupants immediately
  2. Evacuate immediately - Use nearest safe exit
  3. Call 911 - From a safe location outside
  4. Meet at assembly point - Gather at designated area
  5. Do not re-enter - Wait for fire department clearance

Chemical Spill

  1. Alert others - Warn people in the immediate area
  2. Evacuate if necessary - For large or hazardous spills
  3. Contain if safe - Use spill kits for small, non-hazardous spills
  4. Call Campus Security - For guidance and assistance
  5. Ventilate area - Increase air circulation if safe to do so

Evacuation Routes

  • Primary exit - Main hallway door to exterior
  • Secondary exit - Emergency exit through loading area
  • Assembly point - Parking lot near Panowicz Foundry main entrance
  • Accessibility - Elevator use prohibited during emergencies - use emergency phone if assistance needed
